Last Thursday, the Illinois State Police confirmed that their FOID (Firearm Owners Identification) card portal had been hit with a cyber attack, and that about 2,000 Illinoisans who have FOID cards may have had their information compromised.
The ISP news release points out that they’re reaching out to those 2,000 FOID card holders who may have had their personal info stolen. In addition to getting in touch with those who may find that their information has been compromised, the ISP says that they have strengthened their online security requirements and are limiting the use and access of personal information that FOID card applicants submit in their online FOID account. Some of that information could match Illinois resident personal identification information unlawfully obtained from any number of previous cyber breaches.
