Check Point, one of Israel’s largest cyber-security companies, was temporarily taken down on Tuesday by a group of hackers calling themselves “Anonymous Sudan.”
The company’s website, protected against DDoS attacks, returned to operating as normal within minutes of the attack.
Earlier that day, several major universities in Israel, including Tel Aviv University and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, had also been attacked by the same group and were down for several hours.
In a statement on its Telegram account, the hacker group claimed responsibility for the attack on the universities and listed other targets as part of a campaign called OPIsrael, in which activists try to attack targets on the Israeli internet. The group accused Israel’s education sector of wrongdoing in Palestine.
The attack is part of a series of service-preventing attacks that only bring down websites and do not steal information, but cyber security firm Check Point warned that these groups are trying to produce more significant attacks, including ransom attacks and data theft.
The Anonymous Sudan group also attacked websites related to several medical centers, including Rambam Hospital in Haifa, according to Check Point. The hospital, however, denied the attack.
While the attacked websites are already available again, the incident highlights the importance of cyber security measures and the potential harm that hackers can cause. As the threat of cyber attacks grows, it is crucial for companies and organizations to continue implementing robust security measures to prevent potential breaches.
