M7 Group’s Czech and Slovak operator, Skylink, has experienced a cyber attack that has affected its website and customer zone.
In a Facebook post, the company apologised for the system outage and said it was working to repair it. As of the following morning, the site was still unavailable.
Skylink provides direct-to-home and internet TV services in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, and M7 Group also has interests in Hungary and Romania.
It is not yet clear who is behind the attack or how it was carried out. Cyber attacks on TV providers are not uncommon, with hackers often targeting subscription data or using ransomware to extort money.
In 2020, a group calling itself Darkside disrupted Canal+, a sister company to M7 Group, causing some programming to be taken off air.
The attack comes amid increasing concern about cyber security in central and eastern Europe, which has been identified as a target for state-sponsored hackers and criminal groups.
In response, governments in the region have been investing in cyber security, and last year the Czech Republic launched a national cyber security strategy aimed at developing the country’s resilience against cyber attacks.
